Today marks the beginning of Camp NaNoWriMo: July 2015
edition. I’m a big fan of NaNoWriMo, in fact I’m pretty sure I’ve participated
in every November and Camp event since I first discovered it four years ago. So
naturally, I’m participating this month too.
I’m going to be doing updates throughout the month. I’m not
entirely sure how often they’ll be because I don’t currently have a stable
internet connection, but there will be updates! So I thought today that I’d
just introduce you to the novel I’ll be writing.
Firstly, in typical Ely style, it doesn’t have a title yet.
It’s currently being referred to as ‘Rebecca’ in my head, which sort of gives
you an idea as to what it’s about. Maybe. It depends how well you know me.
For those of you who haven’t guessed, it’s a modern day
retelling sort of thing of one of my favourite books of all time, Rebecca by
Daphne du Maurier. There a few key differences—mainly the fact this is a New
Adult, but it also has some plot and character differences. Unfortunately, I
can’t share them without spoiling the original and I want you guys to actually
read that because it’s amazing.
My main character is Vivian Huntleigh. I introduced her the
other day in my post about main characters, but in case you didn’t read that.
She’s 21 and is studying to be a nurse in London. In fact, she’s almost
finished her undergraduate degree when she returns home to Cornwall to look
after her very sick, and very stubborn grandmother.
Naturally, there’s a guy involved. His name is Mattie
Windland, and in school he was one half of the golden couple. His girlfriend,
who I don’t know whether to name Rebecca or not yet, disappeared a year ago.
Things happen between Viv and Mattie and it focuses on the inner turmoil Viv is
subjected to by the small town they live in and the ever-present
person-who-may-or-may-not-be-called-Rebecca.
That’s all I’ve got right now, or at least all I can tell
you without spoiling anything. Please let me know what you think and whether
you’re participating in Camp NaNoWriMo!
