Writing Update #2

It's time for another writing update! I think this is pretty self-explanatory, but if you want to see the first update then just click here.

Some exciting things have happened since that update. I'm sure most of you know that Camp NaNoWriMo has officially started, and we'll be talking about how I'm going with that in a little bit but first, let's talk about the pre-Camp writing that went on.

I planned out my entire storyline for my Rebecca retelling, which is what I'm writing for Camp. I actually did this the day after that original post went up in which I said I was in the beginning stages of planning. I also did a chapter-by-chapter, scene-by-scene outline. As you can tell, I'm definitely a 'planner' rather than a 'pantser'. I'm really excited by where it's going at the moment. I even wrote the first 200 words, mainly because I really struggle with starting things and I wanted something to spring off for Camp.

I've also been writing a few poems, which isn't something I've ever tried out before but am really enjoying. I don't know whether I'll ever share these. At the moment, they're really just something for me to try out.

Most excitingly though, I wrote another five chapters—7,000 words of my main WIP, Tied Together. I haven't really been writing this one in the last few weeks because I've been stuck, so I was incredibly happy to finally push past that and get more written. This brings up my total word count to 53,000 which is just great!

The truth is...I haven't written anything for Camp NaNoWriMo so far. I've been in Barcelona this whole week visiting my cousin so I've been exploring the city rather than sticking myself in a very hot room and writing. I know I'll write once I'm back in the UK so I'm not really worried.

Camp NaNoWriMo 15: My Novel

Today marks the beginning of Camp NaNoWriMo: July 2015 edition. I’m a big fan of NaNoWriMo, in fact I’m pretty sure I’ve participated in every November and Camp event since I first discovered it four years ago. So naturally, I’m participating this month too.

I’m going to be doing updates throughout the month. I’m not entirely sure how often they’ll be because I don’t currently have a stable internet connection, but there will be updates! So I thought today that I’d just introduce you to the novel I’ll be writing.

Firstly, in typical Ely style, it doesn’t have a title yet. It’s currently being referred to as ‘Rebecca’ in my head, which sort of gives you an idea as to what it’s about. Maybe. It depends how well you know me.

For those of you who haven’t guessed, it’s a modern day retelling sort of thing of one of my favourite books of all time, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. There a few key differences—mainly the fact this is a New Adult, but it also has some plot and character differences. Unfortunately, I can’t share them without spoiling the original and I want you guys to actually read that because it’s amazing.

My main character is Vivian Huntleigh. I introduced her the other day in my post about main characters, but in case you didn’t read that. She’s 21 and is studying to be a nurse in London. In fact, she’s almost finished her undergraduate degree when she returns home to Cornwall to look after her very sick, and very stubborn grandmother.

Naturally, there’s a guy involved. His name is Mattie Windland, and in school he was one half of the golden couple. His girlfriend, who I don’t know whether to name Rebecca or not yet, disappeared a year ago. Things happen between Viv and Mattie and it focuses on the inner turmoil Viv is subjected to by the small town they live in and the ever-present person-who-may-or-may-not-be-called-Rebecca.

That’s all I’ve got right now, or at least all I can tell you without spoiling anything. Please let me know what you think and whether you’re participating in Camp NaNoWriMo!

Camp Nano Fever

So Campnanowrimo is finished for another year. No more camping out in the cold wilderness or snuggling up in a fire lit cabin. It's the end for 2012 and our fresh novels are probably baking out in the sun as we try to procastinate our way away. But don't do it just yet. You have a lot of things to talk about before you step away.

Example:

Is this novel really finished, and if it's not, should i finish it?

Is this a worthy story to go out into the public or is it just a personal love bug ready to stay at home?

Was this the story that you initially set out to write? If not, do you like it?

CAMP NANO DIARIES (#2)

Dear Camp Nanoers

So, going strong so far? Maybe, Maybe not. So today, i decided to give you guys your main aim. Right now, you should be well near your 10 000's or even higher, or maybe even lower if your falling behind. But it doesn't really matter. Nano is for the words, but writing is for the story. So, pick now. Pick if you rather value your words or the story in your novel that you are writing. There is no wrong and no right because i totally understand if Nano is just there for a boost in your story or an actual comp that you are vigorously participating in. But you really need to make a decision between those two. Because on my first year of Nano, all I cared was about how many words I got down and that is still fine with me because at least I had something to start with which I could go back and work on. But right now, for camp nano, I barely care about word count and I am sticking to the story that I am trying to write. You just have to see which one works for you and you’ve got it.

CAMP NANOWRIMO

Are you a wanna be Writer who's been having trouble writing the book you've been dying to write forever? You just can't finish it, can you?

Well then it's best to know about Nanowrimo. Especially Camp Nanowrimo which is coming up in 2 days. It starts on the first of August and ends at the end of the month. It's a month long project where you take upon the challenge to write a 50 000 word novel. It's a branch of the main National Novel Writing Month but is still the very same.
